A vasectomy will not decrease your sex drive in any way. You will still have a normal erection and ejaculations, just no sperm. And it does not affect the production of the male hormone testosterone.

Our no-scapel vasectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to cut or seal the small tubes that carry a man’s sperm out the testicles to permanently prevent pregnancy. It is widely regarded as a 99% effective method of male contraception. Our dedicated Men’s Health surgery, embedded in Dr Emma Clinics at Newry, offers vasectomies by Dr Tayo, one of our private in-clinic doctors, who is expert in this procedure.
Before choosing to have a vasectomy, it is important to be sure that it is right for you. Whilst reversible under some conditions, successful reversal is not guaranteed and surgery is required in order to perform a reversal. Therefore we require all patients to book in for a consultation appointment initially, to allow the patient to fully understand the procedure and consider their options.
The vasectomy procedure is extremely quick, painless and straightforward. Carried out under local anaesthetic, which numbs the patient’s scrotum, it takes about 20-30 minutes to complete. Dr Tayo’s keyhole technique is minimally invasive, making micro-incisions in the skin of your scrotum to reach the tubes, or vas deferens, which are then closed either by being tied or sealed.
The puncture closes immediately after the procedure without any need for stitches. And here’s no bleeding and only a barely visible scar. This minor surgery carries low risk of complications or side effects. The no-scalpel vasectomy has a recovery period of just a couple days normally, with minimal bruising or swelling experienced by patients.

When you have your vasectomy, any sperm that were in the position to be ejaculated can live for many weeks. You could ejaculate them and cause a pregnancy during that time. As such, you’ll need to avoid sexual activity for at least 7 days after the procedure. And you’ll need to use another method of contraception for at least the first 8 to 12 weeks post-op, as it can take this long to clear any remaining sperm in your tubes. How long this takes varies from man to man. There’s still a risk of pregnancy during this time.
About 12 weeks after the procedure, you’ll provide us a sample of your semen, which will be tested for sperm. Once tests confirm your semen is sperm-free, the vasectomy is considered successful and you can stop using additional contraception.
From around September 2023, an NHS funding reduction saw Northern Ireland’s HSC drastically scale back vasectomy services via its General Practice Elective Care Service. We expect few if any Northern Ireland GP’s able to offer vasectomies will continue doing so. Prior to this announcement, the average waiting time for HSC (NHS) funded vasectomies in Belfast was 18 months. Dr Emma Clinics welcomes self-pay private patients seeking a vasectomy. Not only are patients seen by Dr Tayo, who is expert in the procedure, but they avoid long waiting times (we can see you sometimes within days) and are treated with discretion in our advanced Newry clinic.

The success rate for a vasectomy is approximately 98-99%.
Recovery from a vasectomy takes approximately one week, with three days of rest (no heavy lifting or exercise), followed by four days at no more than 70% effort.
