As women experience childbirth, particularly vaginal deliveries, their pelvic floor changes. Women can develop conditions such as pelvic organ prolapse or urinary incontinence. Dr Emma Clinics provides a specialist ‘Postnatal check and rehabilitation programme’, led by our specialist Women’s Health Physiotherapist Ms Marian McGuinness.

Most women experience abdominal muscle separation during pregnancy and reconnecting with their body postnatally can be challenging. Marian has guided many women on their postnatal journey through physiotherapy assessment and treatment, individualised rehabilitation programmes and individualised Pilates programmes.

Consultations and therapy are offered in person at our Newry Clinic, ideally located for women in Newry and Mourne and across County Armagh and County Down. We also offer patients from further afield the option of a virtual postnatal consultation.

Postnatal check is for post-natal women, from four weeks post birth onwards, and consists of:

  • A one hour post-natal assessment with our specialist women’s health physiotherapist
  • A thorough examination of patient history
  • A pelvic floor assessment including muscle strength
  • Assessment of abdominal muscle stretching/separation, known as Diastasis Rectus Abdominis Muscle or DRAM
  • Assessment of any physical problems arising from pregnancy and birth – vaginal or caesarean
  • Creation of a bespoke post-natal recovery programme incorporating posture, breathing and core activation
  • Coaching in exercise techniques and periodic assessments to monitor progress and provide ongoing advice

Our Postnatal check is for any woman with physical concerns after birth and is suitable for women experiencing post-natal pelvic pain or back pain, C-section or episiotomy scar soreness, problems with incontinence, and abdominal weakness or separation. We also assess patients’ physical strength and help guide their return to exercise postpartum.

The bespoke programmes we develop for mums are based on their lifestyle and history so that they are realistic and achievable. We introduce many pilates centered exercises that will help post-partum women reconnect with and strengthen their pelvic muscles, improve posture and build-up overall strength. We help women reconnect with their bodies and restore their body confidence.

“I am a strong believer in the phrase ‘if you don’t use it, you lose it’. I love designing Physiotherapy-led Pilates programmes for women, tailored to their needs. Our shared goal is to strengthen and rehabilitate your body and your trust in it.”
– Marian, Pelvic Physiotherapist
